Kaigen-in Temple – A Hidden Zen Sanctuary in Mizunami, Gifu

Tucked away in the quiet hills of Mizunami, Kaigen-in Temple is a serene Zen Buddhist temple of the Sōtō school, founded in the 15th century by the monk Gessen Shōin under the patronage of the local lord Toki Yorimoto.
With over 580 years of history, the temple remains a place where visitors can feel the timeless spirit of Japanese Zen and nature in harmony.

The temple’s main image, a wooden statue of Kannon Bodhisattva (the Goddess of Mercy), was carved in 1356 and is now designated as a Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture.
The delicate carving and calm expression reflect the deep compassion of Buddhism during the medieval era.

Surrounded by cedar forests and stone monuments, Kaigen-in offers a peaceful escape from modern life — a place where time seems to slow down.
Visitors can join Zen meditation (zazen) sessions, enjoy tea with the resident monk, or simply sit in silence to feel the subtle sounds of nature — the wind, birds, and temple bell.

The priest of Kaigen-in Temple is so kindly and energetic.
